SAJJANGARH PALACE / MONSOON PALACE


Perched atop the Aravalli Hills, Sajjangarh Palace, also known as the Monsoon Palace, offers breathtaking panoramic views of Udaipur’s lakes, palaces, and the surrounding countryside. This grand structure was designed to serve as an astronomical center and a monsoon retreat for the Mewar rulers.

  • Built in 1884 by Maharana Sajjan Singh, the palace was originally planned as an observatory to track monsoon clouds but later served as a summer retreat.
  • The palace was part of Mewar’s strategic defense, offering an elevated watchtower to monitor enemy movements.
  • During British rule, it was briefly taken over but later reclaimed by the Mewar royal family.
  • Today, the palace is maintained by the Forest Department and is part of the Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary, preserving the region’s rich biodiversity.
