  • Mewar's early capital was Nagda (established in 568 AD), later moved to Chittorgarh in the 8th century.
  • By the 16th century, repeated Mughal invasions weakened Chittor’s defense, prompting Maharana Udai Singh II to shift his capital to Udaipur, strategically protected by lakes, forests, and the Aravalli hills.
  • The foundation of City Palace began with ‘Rai Angan’—the royal courtyard—on the site suggested by a hermit Udai Singh met during a hunting expedition.
  • After Udai Singh’s death in 1572, his son Maharana Pratap ruled Udaipur, famously resisting the Mughal forces in the Battle of Haldighati (1576).
  • Over centuries, successive Maharanas expanded the palace, but frequent Maratha invasions left Mewar in decline by the 18th century.
  • In 1818, Maharana Bhim Singh signed a treaty with the British for protection, preserving Udaipur’s sovereignty.
  • Post-independence (1947), the princely state merged with democratic India in 1949. The palace was later transformed into a heritage hotel and museum by the royal family.
  • In 2024, a dispute between Vishvaraj Singh Mewar and Arvind Singh Mewar over palace access led to clashes outside the complex
